Relating With The Nigeria Police Officer: No Going Into Enclosures

For sinister motives some criminal-minded police officers could threaten you with an arrest. If you find yourself in this kind of situation, where the officers tells you he is arresting you for whatever reason, do not go into any enclosures with him, particularly, if he is armed. Let him deal with you in the full glare of passersby. When the officer insists in going into an enclosure with you that should raise the red flag. Call the attention of a superior officer who is around, if you suspect that some pranks are about to be played on you.

There have been cases where at such enclosures the ‘suspect’, God forbid that it is you, have, due to not cooperating when it seemed they are about to be dispossessed of what they are carrying got shot. The story that the officer would tell would be like “the suspect was trying to escape when we found out he was a criminal so I shot him”. If it is difficult for a living man to controvert a statement made by the police what would be the fate of the dead? Be wise.

Relating With The Nigeria Police Officer: During Search

A lot of people get into trouble with the police who are on a ‘stop and search’ operation due to their reaction or inattentiveness. Whenever you are stopped by a policeman on the street, highway or anywhere and you are asked to surrender yourself for search, do not panic, argue or disobey lawful orders. They have a legal right to stop and search. That a search is conducted on you or your vehicle does not make you a criminal. It cannot automatically lead to your arrest, unless something incriminating is found on you or your vehicle. It is important to say here that you must jealously guard against people dropping incriminating things on you or your vehicle. A vehicle with doors or boot unlock can be used by someone that wants to deal with you for whatever reason to get you into trouble by dumping or hiding things like guns, drugs, stolen items or even a dead body in your vehicle and fingering you to the police. If you think that such scenes that you see in movies are just figments of the imagination of the producers then you do not know how wicked this world is and the length people can go to undo their fellow men.

When you are to be searched, watch closely and carefully between the fingers of the officer. This is so that you do not become a victim of the bag eggs in the police force that can do anything to get money or of conspiracy between your enemies and compromised policemen who may have hidden something incriminating between their fingers like a pinch of drugs. Where you are not vigilant enough, they may drop it in your pocket and accuse you of drug possession. That may result in your either parting with so much money to free (bail) yourself or if you insist on your innocence and prefer to get to the bottom of the matter, they will enter a case against you and the exhibit used as proof of your drug possession even at the court of law. When this happens you can be sure that they will believe them more than you. You will have a very difficult time exonerating yourself.

When these men are on ‘stop and search’ operation, it will be safer to carefully bring out your pockets yourself, although they may not allow you to do that. Seek their permission to do it. But if they insist you cannot do that, you can courteously demand that they show you their hands. You could even make that request harmlessly with a joke that if the officer is truly you friend he should show you his hands before searching you. If that request is also turned down, harmless as it is, then you have to be very cautious and you need to be eagle-eyed to ensure nothing is hidden in between their finger to get you into trouble.

Also ensure that whenever you are carrying items that the police would want you to identify take the documents covering them with you to avoid being delayed by the police or the item confiscated until you can show proof of ownership or becoming a victim of a sadistic officer looking for citizens to prey on. Do have a smooth passage.

Relating With The Nigeria Police Officer: Your Attitude

No doubt, policemen have a lawful duty to stop people at checkpoints, to ask questions, demand for identification and other documents or search persons or the vehicles they are driving. For some people, the police checkpoint is the best place to prove their might, how connected they are, or exhibit their oratory prowess. They would rant and rant in answer to just a simple question put before them by the police. That is a big mistake, because in the process they not only waste their time but sometimes end up in trouble with the officer. Some would violently dare armed policemen. There are days they may be lucky to get away with such behavior, and may consider themselves as fearless or heroic but that would definitely not be always.

There are times when such people have provoked police officers beyond their patience level and ended up with severe beating with boots and gun butts. In worst cases, in a bid to show their strength, they would fight to wrestle the gun from the officer and in the process it could go off and kill them, an incident commonly referred to as accidental discharge.

I would like to plead that the checkpoint is not a place to prove that you are a macho man. It is not the right place to fight for recognition. Even if you want to claim your right, you have to do it with wisdom because the officer you are dealing with may have lost any sense of reasoning or respect due to alcohol or drugs use. Whoever told you that a police officer cannot be drunk or get high with drugs? Even if he were not on drugs or alcohol, who told you that the officer cannot tell a genuine threat from senseless bravado. The officer would have come across people like you who because of their wealth feel they can threaten their way around only for them to buckle under a simple identity trick by the policeman and turn out to be a wanted criminal.

It is very wrong and off course very dangerous to argue or dare a policeman on lawful or unlawful duty, whether armed or not. Some are called “Kill and go”, don’t be a victim. Be street wise!
